The Welsh Government have awarded Gwent Music with grant funding over 2022-2025 to implement the priorities set out in the National Plan for Music Education. One of the programmes of work the service need to deliver as part of this grant is ‘First Experiences’. The ‘First Experiences’ programme of work will ensure that every child and young person has an equal opportunity to play, sing, take part in and create music in primary school settings. The programme of work will provide opportunities for children to experience a wide range of instruments and styles of music.

Gwent Music Service are looking to recruit up to a potential 5 peripatetic First Experiences Music Tutors to provide whole class teaching in different genres of music in schools across Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, Monmouthshire County Council, Newport City Council and Torfaen County Borough Council.

The First Experiences Music Tutors will be responsible for planning and delivering quality first experience creative classroom lessons, music centre and cluster hub programmes as directed and in accordance with Gwent Music policies, procedures and guidelines, and in line with the National Music Service Plan for Wales, in order to enable pupils to achieve their full potential.

The First Experiences Music Tutor posts will be appointed on a temporary fixed term basis for 12 months in the first instance, before the end of the first year the impact will be evaluated, and these posts may be extended, if grant funding allows.

The First Experiences Music Tutor will have experience of performing on a musical instrument or range of music instruments and will have substantial experience of large group and classroom delivery to a high standard.
