Job Title: Subject Leader – Geography - Newtown Campus

CONTRACT DETAILS: Salary Scale TLR 2B

LINE MANAGER: Head Teacher

JOB PURPOSE: To lead the Geography Department on the Newtown Campus, by supporting the development of high quality teaching at Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5; to support the development of Geography across the campus.

Job Purpose

To lead a team of subject teachers in the delivery of effective teaching and learning within the department.


Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities
 To develop strategies to raise standards of pupil achievement and be accountable for pupil outcomes within the subject.
 To develop strategies to ‘Close the Gap’ in attainment of eFSM pupils.
 To work with Literacy / Numeracy / DCF Coordinators to improve standards of Literacy / Numeracy / DCF across the school, and include the development of Literacy, Numeracy and DCF into the subject scheme of work.
 To work with other key staff within the Humanities AoLE to drive preparation for and implementation of the new Curriculum for Wales
 To keep the department up to date with any curriculum changes and ensure appropriate CPD is in place for staff, if necessary.
 To work with colleagues to formulate a Departmental Improvement Plan for the department which has coherence and relevance to the needs of students and to the wider School Improvement Plan.
 To plan, implement and maintain under review an appropriate scheme of work.
 To include appropriate cross curricular themes into the subject scheme of work, including Cwricwlwm Cwmreig, PSE, environmental awareness and citizenship.
 The implementation of assessment procedures in line with school policy.
 Making necessary arrangements for external examinations.
 Supporting Department members in their professional development.
 Assisting in the appointment of staff.
 Organising and leading regular Departmental meetings.
 Ensuring the existence of an appropriate departmental handbook of policies and procedures.
 Supporting Department members in matters of discipline in line with the policy.
 Setting work for the classes of absent Department members.
 Be responsible for Performance Management within the department.
 The efficient and effective management of resources allocated to the Department.
 Overall responsibility for classrooms allocated to the Department, including displays.
 To ensure the existence of proper Health and Safety policies and practices within the department.
 To lead and manage the teachers within the department and to manage resources in order to ensure the highest possible standards of pupil achievement.
 To act as a lead practitioner in the teaching of the subject.
 To be responsible for ensuring that practice within the department is consistent with established school policies and procedures.
 To promote the highest standards of professional practice within the department.
 To promote positive pupil attitude towards learning and behaviour.
 To promote the aims and aspirations of the school through the work of the department.
 To promote a positive emotional and physical learning environment.
 Any other reasonable duties appropriate to the post as agreed with the Headteacher from time to time.

These responsibilities are in addition to those appropriate to this post and described in the latest Teachers Pay and Conditions Document. The responsibilities of the post may be amended by the Headteacher following consultation with the post holder and will be reviewed annually.

All relevant resources/equipment/materials to assist in the day to day functioning of a successful department.


Supervision/Management of People

Line manager to teachers within the department.

 To oversee teaching within the department and ensure its quality through regular monitoring, including classroom visiting, the viewing of pupils’ work and the use of available data.
 To devise systems for the use of individual pupil targets and pupil data to monitor pupil progress.
 Undertake regular reviews of Departmental performance which feeds into the Departmental and School Self Evaluation and Improvement Plans.
