Full Time Secondment September 2023 (or as soon as possible thereafter – November 2023 at the latest) to August 2024

Due to the forthcoming maternity leave of the substantive post-holder Ysgol Bryn Derw are offering an exciting opportunity for an existing or aspirational Assistant Head Teacher to work in our growing Special School (opened September 2017) for young people aged 3-19 who have been diagnosed with ASD and associated complex learning difficulties. The school has grown rapidly from 32 pupils and 24 staff in September 2017, to 114 pupils and over 90 staff across two sites by September 2023. Ysgol Bryn Derw was inspected by Estyn in March 2020 and received ‘Excellent’ ratings in 4 out of 5 areas.

We aim to provide the highest possible standards of education and support for all our pupils regardless of their level of need. We are looking for a committed leader who will thrive on this exciting opportunity to support the development of our school as part of a dynamic Senior Leadership Team. In the role of Acting Assistant Headteacher, you will experience all aspects of school leadership, including both input into strategic planning and operational leadership of the school, with a particular focus on leading on Curriculum, Teaching and Learning on our larger site for 7-19 year olds. Offering inspiring support & challenge to teachers & support staff will be crucial, to help us deliver excellent experiences to all pupils every day.

The Governing Body are committed to appointing a Seconded Assistant Head Teacher who:

- Has a genuine commitment and enthusiasm for raising standards across the whole school

- Has a proven track record of successful strategic leadership and management skills with demonstrable experience in a Special School or other specialist setting

- Has strong knowledge of ASD specific teaching strategies

- Is forward thinking, imaginative and visionary, and able to develop a caring, nurturing learning environment

- Is able to build a relationship of mutual respect with the pupils, parents, staff and the Governing Body

- Is an experienced leader able to demonstrate the ability to motivate, challenge and inspire staff and children through good interpersonal skills

- Will develop our commitment to working positively with parents, carers, the local authority and outside agencies

- Is able to work in partnership with the Headteacher and Governing Body to continue to raise standards through a shared vision

- Has experience of leading on aspects of the School Development Plan

- Shares specialist best practice with other specialist and mainstream settings and outside agencies

- Has excellent organisational and communication skills
